Germany: Pilot Island

Pilot Island has been largely restored after the storm surge of October 2023

The storm surge of October 2023 caused severe damage to the pilot island, which has now largely been repaired.

The pilot house is designed for educational work and leisure and can be used flexibly. In addition to the rooms for accommodation and catering, there is also a small laboratory for experiments.

A further group room is available in the form of the poison shack. Since the destruction of the kitchen wing by the storm surge in October 2023, catering operations have ceased. The restored building can be used as an exhibition or seminar room in the future.

The garden area around the pilot house allows for play and leisure in the fresh sea air. Tents can also be set up here and fire pits can be used.

The pilot house, including the grounds and outbuildings, is leased to the Ostseeschule Flensburg on a long-term basis. The harbour is operated by the association Naturnaher Wasserwanderplatz Schleimünde e.V.

What is at issue:

The pilot island lies in the middle of a cultural and natural landscape that has grown over the centuries. It can only be reached by water, as the island is separated from the country by the Schleimündung nature reserve, one of the oldest protected areas in Germany.

In 2008, the Lighthouse Foundation acquired the pilot island.
