Tanzania: ARTPORT_making waves

What is at issue:

ARTPORT_making waves is an international curatorial collective focusing on art projects that explore climate change and sustainability. Established in 2006, ARTPORT_making waves has organized numerous innovative art and cultural projects that promote tolerance, sustainable development, and the common good. The aim is to raise awareness of socially relevant issues and to stimulate public discussion for positive change.

WE ARE OCEAN Tanzania brings together traditional knowledge from various parts of the country and connects it to the people, all in regard to ocean protection and the interconnection of a healthy ocean and a healthy land.

Tanzania, the government and its organizing team invited WE ARE OCEAN_Tanzania, to present them as part of their Africa Blue Food Festival on September 25 and to host an entire Kids Corner there. The topic is how to engage society in a “Friendly Blue Food” movement through arts and science and informal education projects.

What's happening now:

The event took place on 24 September 2025.

What we have achieved:

We worked with natural materials - plywood, natural sponge, locally collected and recycled materials - to co-create 40 miniature coral reefs, which will go on to be exhibited at local schools to extend the impact of the project, and raise awareness for the importance of ocean protection.

While the delegates from the Africa Blue Food Festival planted seaweed and installed beehives on the Tanzanian coast, ARTPORT focused efforts on this fantastic opportunity to encourage, teach, and craft solutions with the young participants - and in turn, to learn from them!

Key takeaways from the activity are how youth has real power to shape civil society, spark positive change, realise their own agency, and can be empowered to take real, effective action to better our society and protect our shared environment.
